The Story Behind the Coffee
The Finca San José Ocaña, located in San Juan Sacatepequez, has been owned by the Sanchez family for over 110 years. San Jose Ocaña started as a forestry farm management and has always been involved in sustainable agriculture processes. It became a fine coffee producing farm, serving only the prime speciality coffee market because of its high altitude, good clayish soils, and varietals.
The farm has its own wet mill on the premises, which allows them to control quality. Growing beans at 2,000 meters above sea level increases the density of the coffee cherry and provides lower yields with higher quality. The farmer believes that every coffee bean that comes out of the farm must have the best quality possible, and it must be produced sustainably since it is the mission of San José Ocaña Estate.
Guillermo Sanchez is the current owner of San José Ocaña, the fifth generation of coffee farmer in the Sanchez family to run the farm. As is common with large families in the area, they own several companies in which different family members are tasked with operating them. Guillermo is also a board member of the Guatemalan coffee association, ANACAFE.
Some areas of the estate are still dedicated to forest management. Both planted and native forests operate under government-approved practices set by the National Institute of Forestry, INAB. Sustainable practices are highly valued in the area for the long-term preservation, development, and cultivation of both land management and coffee growing, which are crucial to the region.
