The Story Behind the Coffee
Hunbatz is grown by a collection of small coffee producers in the Cuilco region of Huehuetenango, in Guatemala's remote northwestern highlands. The farms there are shaded by a mix of native trees, banana trees, and bean trees that supports the health of the soil and the coffee itself.
The name comes from Mayan mythology. In the Popol Vuh, the sixteenth-century Mayan creation story, brothers Hunbatz and Hunchouén were gifted artists — skilled as singers, painters, sculptors, and craftsmen. According to the legend, the pair once climbed a tree that grew too tall for them to climb back down. As they struggled among the branches, their clothing turned into tails and both brothers transformed into monkeys. Hunbatz became the howler monkey, who the Mayans honoured as a deity of art, music, and craftsmanship. It's a story that echoes the skill and tradition passed down through generations of the farmers who grow this coffee today.
For every 24kg bag of Hunbatz sold, a tree is planted in Guatemala on behalf of the purchasing roaster, connecting every cup back to the land it came from.
