The Story Behind the Coffee
Buzira is a community located in the southern Rwenzori Mountains, Uganda. It is situated closely to the main washing station in the area, Nyabirongo. Here, coffee cherries are processed from a wide area within the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains. Some of the cherries are fermented in large tanks, washed and then dried on raised beds or mechanically depending on environmental factors. When dried, the beans are stored until export.
The Buzira community have benefitted from the local coffee industry having worked in partnership to establish a clean water supply for the community in 2020. Supporting and training farmers in the Rwenzoris is a large part of the coffee cooperatives and importers work.
